The Social Committee would like to send everyone a happy, safe, and fun month of August. Chas and I will be traveling northwest to see our beautiful country. We also plan on visiting other UU churches. When we all get back together in September it will be fun to share all our August memories.

Live life with love,

Social Justice

UU the Vote along with many local UU congregations are joining with the “Yes on 4” organization to protect reproductive rights in Florida, urging voters to cast their ballots in favor of Amendment 4 to the Florida constitution in the November election. “Yes on 4” is holding weekly virtual phone banks on Thursday evenings in August. No experience is necessary and training and support will be provided while you make calls. For more information and or to join go to Weekly Virtual Phone Bank or search Weekly Virtual Phone Bank.

On Sept. 28-29, NCUU, along with many UU congregations across the U.S., will host a Climate Justice Revival. Through conversations, worship, and advocacy, congregations will work together to realize climate justice in our communities. We are in the early stages of planning, and more information will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. There is a role for everyone in this exciting project. To get involved, contact Don Wright or Carole Goodwin. To read more go to www.uuclimatejustice.org.

On June 8, NCUU participated in the annual Citrus LGBTQ+ Pride Rally. There was a very good turnout in spite of the sweltering heat.

August/September the Plate

Share the Plate donations in August and September will go to Citrus County Blessings. Their goal is to help children get enough food to develop healthy bodies and pay attention in school and beyond. Almost 17% of Citrus County residents are considered below the poverty level, nearly 25% of children are living in poverty. A staggering 71% of children enrolled in Citrus County’s public schools participate in the Free/Reduced lunch program. The Blessings program provides over 2600 local students in 31 schools with food to take home every Friday of the school year. The students are also given additional food to take home over the school breaks. Each child is recommended by a school employee.

GA Newsletter Report

Dear Members and Friends,

I am pleased to share news from the UUA General Assembly held on June 23, 2024. 80% of the voting delegates voted to adopt changes to Article II of the UUA bylaws. The new values of Equity, Generosity, Interdependence, Justice, Pluralism, and Transformation are centered around Love.

Some may wonder if this change in emphasis means the Seven Principles and Six Foundations are no longer important or will no longer be discussed.

Not at all. While future UUA materials and publications may not prominently feature them, these principles remain vital in defining our historical Unitarian Universalism.

During her address to the convention, the UUA attorney clarified that this shift in messaging does not diminish Congregational Independence or our commitment to the Seven Principles.

However, this new focus on embracing marginalized populations and a reduced emphasis on the Seven Principles has sparked mixed reactions, particularly along conservative lines, notably among the older established population.

This definitive challenge prompts us to ask whether this resistance is rooted in a reluctance to change, or if deeper biases are surfacing around race, class, age, and sexual orientation.

As a living faith, Unitarian Universalism mandates growth and self-reflection at least every 15 years to remain relevant and strong. Just as all families evolve so too must we.

Will our connections at NCUU be affected by these new Affirmations? I hope not. Let’s take this opportunity to delve into and understand these new value statements. Let’s investigate and integrate them into our speakers’ talks and sermons, and commit to educating ourselves on these new Affirmations.

Let’s embrace this change as an opportunity for growth and unity within our beloved community.

Warm regards,
Chas
